My relationship with D’arcy has been built on Whistler Mountain, where D’arcy has established a reputation sliding on snow for pleasure, and then at work, moving it in such a way that many, many others could enjoy it too. Not only that, but he inspired and directed others to do their jobs to the best of their abilities.
For many years now as we worked together in our separate careers, I have entertained the idea of operating grooming machines, and D’arcy has enabled this fantasy by helping to train me to drive said machines. No question from me has ever been too stupid, nor any comment I made too ignorant for D’arcy. He always gives his best response so that learning happens, and everyone moves forward better than they were.
I respect D’arcy for the way he can enter the Patrol Bump room at the beginning of a shift, address and greet everyone in the room, and then in a friendly, professional manner get his business done. He accepts comments, requests and concerns with genuine concern, and with equal grace, relay what he needs from us. I have never seen him flustered or thrown off his game by any circumstance, which makes it very easy for everyone else to perform at their best .. . He inspires!
He also will accept snacks of unknown origins with equal grace and humility; ask him about the “sausage” treats some time . . . Same ones Henry likes so much!
At our last meeting at Meadow Park, D’arcy was celebrating the “R” word (remission) and it was great to see him in a happy place. I could only hope to handle the emotional and physical journey he is going through with half as much composure as D’arcy has displayed throughout this experience. God, how I hope there is a happy outcome!
The world could use more guys like D’arcy . . . . .
